Coffee!

I’ve been around a pretty long time (over 70) and drank coffee on and off during that time.  I was confused by what info was being presented to me, (coffee is bad for your health – coffee is good for your health) so my attitude has shifted back and forth.

A few years ago I decided to buy organic green coffee beans and roasted them my self, and I drank one 16oz. travel coffee mug each morning.  This worked well, I didn’t experience any negative effects (trouble sleeping, anxiety or any of the other known things from caffeine).

Now, over the past few years, I have learned that there are many positive health effects of drinking the stuff!  The reported negative effects are more due to overconsumption, and/or the low quality of the beans used.  My family is almost entirely chooses organic food which helps TREMENDOUSLY!

Consuming this beverage has positive health benefits such as lowering many issues with the liver such as cancer, cirrhosis etc.  Coffee intake was associated with reduced risk of oral, pharynx, liver, colon, prostate, endometrial cancer and melanoma, but increased lung cancer risk.

So, in light of this info, drink coffee but do not over consume, and make sure it’s organic!

Enzymes

An enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.  They are very important in maintaining good health.

There are digestive enzymes, which help aid the digestion process and systemic enzymes, which help with overall health and healing.  Our body makes some, but it is an exhaustible resource that should be replenished through food and supplementation.

Enzymes are temperature sensitive, and should be stored and consumed thusly.  Typically fruits and veggies contain the correct amount of digestive enzymes to digest itself.  This is why you should eat a good percentage of raw foods, (NOT all raw).

Dr. Edward Group:

“Whether breaking down foods or healing from injury, nearly every process in the human body involves chemical reactions. Enzymes are proteins that act as the catalysts for chemical reactions. Every cell in the body uses enzymes for building, maintenance, and repair. Enzymes are available in food, and the human body produces many enzymes on its own. However, natural production of enzymes begins to decline as early as age 25. Joint pain, circulatory problems, slower healing, and an increase in the incidence of disease are all too common with people who are enzyme deficient and suffering the effects of aging.”

So, enzymes are very important to our life process, and should be a priority for you to get what you need!

Manuka Honey – Help with Antibiotic Resistant Bugs.

For those that are unfamiliar with the great health benefits of honey, and/or specifically with Manuka honey, here’s some good information.

From http://www.realfoodforlife.com:

Health Benefits of Honey

1. Prevent cancer and heart disease
It contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.

2. Reduce ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders
Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis. This may be related to the 3rd benefit.

3. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal
“All honey is antibacterial because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide,” said Peter Molan, director of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

4. Increase athletic performance
Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time than other sweeteners.

5. Reduces a cough and throat irritation
It helps with coughs, particularly buckwheat honey. In a study of 105 children, a single dose of buckwheat honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep.

6. Balance the 5 elements honey
It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for at least 4000 years and is considered to affect all three of the body’s primitive material imbalances positively. It is also said to be useful in improving eyesight, weight loss, curing impotence and premature ejaculation, urinary tract disorders, bronchial asthma, diarrhea, and nausea.

Honey is referred as “Yogavahi” since it has a quality of penetrating the deepest tissues of the body. When honey is used with other herbal preparations, it enhances the medicinal qualities of those preparations and also helps them to reach the deeper tissues.

7. Blood sugar regulation
Even though it contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners. Its exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. Some kinds of honey do have a low hypoglycemic index, so they don’t jolt your blood sugar.  Watch this video Sweetener Comparisonwhere I compare stevia, brown rice syrup, honey, molasses, and agave, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each.

8. Heal wounds and burns
External application of honey has been shown to be as effective as conventional treatment with silver sulfadiazine. It is speculated that the drying effect of the simple sugars and honey’s antibacterial nature combine to create this effect. Studies have shown it to be very successful in healing wounds.

9. Probiotic
Some varieties possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifidobacteria. This may explain many of the “mysterious therapeutic properties of honey.”

10. Strengthen the immune system
Manuka Honey has been found to stimulate the production of immune cells according to a study at the School of Medicine, Cardiff University, UK. Manuka is a favourite of mine.

Manuka honey comes from bees that feed on the Manuka plant in New Zealand, and it is a “super honey” because it has high amounts of methylglyoxal (MG) which is very therapeutic.  All honeys have MG but Manuka has much higher amounts.  Also found as UMF honey (Unique Manuka Factor).  The honey is rated by the level of MG in the honey.  Anything over 10 is considered having therapeutic effects.  It can be as high as 20 percent from higher quality sources.

Manuka is effective against MRSA!  So maybe it should be the go to “antibiotic” of the future!

Kuerig – Great way of making coffee?

Keurig is very convenient, but is it a healthy way of making your coffee?  Not so much!

From www.Greenmedinfo.com:

  • How fresh is the coffee in a K Cup?
  • What toxins am I exposing myself to as the hot water forces the coffee through the little holes poked in the plastic cup?
  • What is that lid made of that is poked at the top to allow the water to enter the cup?
  • What chemicals are used in the flavored coffee selections?
  • Is there a filter inside the plastic cup? What is it made of and how is it secured inside the plastic cup?

Mold and mildew is a big problem!  Some people have this issue and are affected by it, some not so much.  The problem is that the internal tank and tubes never get drained out and dried!  Dark, warm. moist, the perfect breeding ground for mold!

Then there is the problem of the quality of the coffee.  Is it fresh?  What toxins am I exposed to from the machine itself?  What are the coffees flavored with?

If you consider all the toxin exposure, and the freshness of the coffee, doing “your own” makes a lot of sense!

Personally I just use organic green coffee beans, roast and grind myself, and use an Aeropress coffee brewer to make it.  Best coffee ever!

Hearing loss is caused by various things…However, nutrition helps!

Hearing loss is usually associated with seniors, but it can be an issue at any age!

Our ears are like any other organ in the body, they need good nutrition to function at their best. If good nutrition is lacking hearing will be affected just as much as any other organ functions!

Inflammation and free radicals (caused by various factors) are the main culprits in most chronic diseases, and the best way to mitigate them is through proper nutrition via good food and supplements.  The B vitamins (particularly folate, B9 and B12)  play a large part in mitigating hearing issues.

Whether you, or a loved one, is suffering from hearing loss, please heed this advice and put more of a priority on nutrition as something that helps in ALL diseases, and without the “side effects” of pharmaceutical drugs!

Boron – Is it Healthy?

Boron (pronounced BO-ron) is an element discovered in 1808.  It has many uses including pyrotechnics and flares.  An isotope (Boron 10) is a good absorber of neutrons and is used in control rods of reactors, as a radiation shield and as a neutron detector.

Boron has many uses including a detergent booster (Borax), and is an ingredient in making borosilicate glass.

But, are their any uses for human health?  YUP!

In fact we can use Borax (Sodium Tetraborate, hexahydrate or sodium borate ) as a source of Boron to improve health.

From http://www.growyouthful.com, sources provided:

A limited amount of boron is absolutely essential for good health. Here are some of its properties (at different concentrations):

  • Protect’s you from Fluorides. Borax protects against the accumulation of fluorides in the body; is effective as an antidote in fluoride toxicity; and can remove fluorides from the body. (1,2,3,4,5,20)
  • Anti-microbial. Borax is toxic to insects, parasites, protozoa and bacteria.
  • Fungicide. Effective against moulds and fungi, internally and externally. (17,18)
  • Anti-viral.
  • Hormone normaliser. Stimulates the production of hormones, stabilises estrogen, assists with insulin use and blood glucose control, triglyceride use and production of reactive oxygen. With boron sufficiency, blood serum triglyceride levels are significantly lower. (12) Estrogen replacement therapy may not be necessary. (13,16)
  • Immune system enhancer. (12) Promotes healing of wounds. (14)
  • Reduction and control of inflammation. (14,16)
  • Aphrodisiac for men and women. See low libido. Boron stimulates the production of DHT and testosterone (14,16) and normalises oestrogen.
  • Toxin removal. Chelator / protection from heavy metals. (8)
  • Stabiliser of calcium, silicon, copper and magnesium levels, inhibits calcification. (12). Boron sufficiency normalises calcium levels, preventing both abnormal calcium deposition and bone weakness. (12,13,14) Boron sufficiency inhibits the accumulation of inorganic copper in the bones (12) and prevents loss of bone. (13) Boron assists with the assimilation of various minerals, particularly calcium and silicon. Those with insufficient boron in their diets may suffer a variety of bone, skin and connective tissue ailments. Insufficient body silicon is associated with rapid aging.
  • Mental enhancement. Improves attention, both short and long term memory, perception, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity. (12,14)

Borax as a remedy

Borax has successfully been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments. (7,9,10,12,13,14,15,16) You can use it for both prevention and treatment.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an inflammatory autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own joints, causing degeneration and deformity. It is more common in women, and can occur at any age. Often it develops into osteoarthritis. Work by Prof Roger Wyburn-Mason identified an amoeba in the joint as the cause in certain susceptible people. Boron is an effective cure. (14,15)
  • Osteoarthritis is a wearing away of the joints, particularly those that have been subject to trauma, infection or over-use when injured. It is more common in men. The cartilage or tough fibrous matter around the joint wears away and the bones rub against each other, causing pain and and further permanent damage to the joint. (14,15)
  • Osteoporosis (decalcification of the bones) or osteopenia. (12,13,14)
  • Other bone and connective tissue diseases such as Dupuytren’s disease.
  • Blood lipid disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure), arterial diseases. (12,14)
  • Obesity.
  • Cancer. (6,14,19) Boron may be a preventative for prostate cancer.
  • Swollen gums or loose teeth (pyorrhoea). This is a bit like arthritis of the teeth and gums.
  • Antiseptic. Very effective for bladder infection and urinary tract infection (UTI). (17) For other infections apply topically or take internally diluted to the recommended dose.
  • Spondylitis (arthritis of the spine with inflammation in the joints). Calcium is lost from the spinal vertebrae, leading to fusion and disc degeneration. Spondylitis responds to mineral treatments, particularly boron.
  • Gout. Boron is an effective remedy.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus.

In the USA you can purchase 20 Mule Team Borax at most grocery stores.  You should check the label and avoid any added ingredients or scents.

My wife and I started taking this as a “concentrate” made by adding a teaspoon of Borax to one quart of water.  Let it fully dissolve, then take one teaspoon of the liquid with meals 2 or 3 times a day.  You can take higher doses to handle conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, joint pain, and muscle cramps.

For fungal infections (including candida), mycoplasma, and removing fluoride – take 14 teaspoons of the concentrate daily.

So you see that taking something that is natural and inexpensive, like Borax, can be beneficial to our health!

Since we just started taking this, I will update in a few months, to review our changes!
